Research and Policy Centers

The academic achievement gaps that exist among racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups have been a focus of research and policy for the past three decades. Previous internet resource guides produced by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education have cataloged the research on school performance and described policies and reform strategies aimed at combating low achievement. This year's achievement gap resource guide focuses on the role that individual mechanisms, such as effort and school readiness, and other characteristics, such as English language ability, play in shaping student academic performance. It presents a guide to the research and resources on the influence that cognitive development, academic motivation, and English-language proficiency may have on educational achievement gaps.
