Event Details: Preemptive Education Conference Weekend
The Preemptive Education Conference finds its roots in the Urban Word NYC's Annual Mentor, Teacher, Educator & Community Activist Training. Now in collaboration with the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs at NYU, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, the Institute for Urban and Minority Education, CUNY Graduate Center, NYCoRE, El Puente, and Academy for Young Writers, the meeting aims to examine critical issues that affect today’s youth, while providing creative and practical resources to address them. Using the power of spoken word poetry and hip hop as the lens to explore language and privilege, participants will learn best practices in student-centered and critical pedagogy from professionals in key fields of education, youth development, and spoken word & hip-hop.
This year’s theme, The New Digital Underground: Voice, Media & Critical Pedagogy, will explore the impact of digital and social media on teaching and learning, and ways to utilize advances in technology to engage students.
This 3 Day Conference is designed for educators, mentors, administrators, guidance counselors, community leaders, education students, hip hop and spoken word educators and practitioners, and anyone committed to urban education. Gain a better understanding of the scope of hip hop history, culture, and politics. Deepen your practice as an urban educator, and engage in best practice approaches to student-centered learning.
