"I Have a Dream" Foundation Alliance
The Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) has partnered with the “I Have a Dream” Foundation - DeHostos Chapter in an effort to promote literacy, cultivate voice and increase agency among their urban and minority high school students. We have initiated the IUME On-line Student Newsletter Project, as an out-of-school time program designed to introduce young Dreamers to the world of online journalism, enhance their writing capacity, and promote critical thinking as community reporters. Online social media outlets such as Wordpress, Twitter and Facebook are used as mediums to share critical and narrative perspectives about local or global issues and concerns. Using Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as a model for our work, we are getting students excited about research by making correlations between Literacy, popular culture and community issues. Along this process we are striving for our students to have greater command over their voice while training them as researchers, interviewers, community advocates and digital media producers. We are excited about this project and looking forward to our students' first newsletter release in late spring. Stay posted!
