Cati de los Rios, IUME Research Fellow, receives NCTE Fellowship

IUME Research Fellow, Cati de los Ríos, has been awarded a prestigious fellowship from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). She is among 12 scholars selected nationwide for NCTE's Cultivating New Voices Among Scholars of Color Fellowship, 2014-2016 cohort.

The Cultivating New Voices (CNV) program is "designed to provide two years of support, mentoring, and networking opportunities for early career scholars of color. The program aims to work with doctoral candidates and early career post-secondary faculty of color to cultivate the ability to draw from their own cultural and linguistic perspectives as they conceptualize, plan, conduct, write, and disseminate findings from their research. The program provides socialization into the research community and interaction with established scholars whose own work can be enriched by their engagement with new ideas and perspectives."

To date, over 80 fellows have been selected since the program's inception in 2000. During this period, NCTE notes, "fellows have successfully defended dissertations, have accepted tenure-track professorial positions and community organizing roles, have presented at numerous national and international conferences, and among other things, have received research, teaching, and service wards.  Equally important is that fellows have assumed major leadership roles within NCTE such as chairing research committees and serving on the Research Foundation and on the Executive Committee."

In informing Cati of her award, Professor Juan Guerra, Trustee and Director of the Program stated, "As a Research Foundation Trustee and a faculty member at the University of Washington at Seattle, I am honored to be leading the 2014-2016 Cohort. In the 10 years that I have served as a mentor for the CNV Program, I have come to appreciate the incredible value of the experience that CNV Fellows and their senior mentors get to share. My fellow Trustees on the Research Foundation and I look forward to an exciting and enriching experience for you, the other eleven fellows, and the twelve mentors in your cohort as well."

Cati's CNV mentor is UC Berkeley's Professor of Literacy, Language and Culture, Dr. Kris Gutierrez.
